The Profile: The Laundress’ Canadian ChampionLifestyle
A few years ago, I was introduced to The Laundress at a press event. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the modern yet classic packaging and the luxe scent of the signature laundry detergent.
As I’ve added a few more cashmere sweaters and wool pieces to my closet, I’ve learned very quickly that taking care of each garment is of the utmost importance if I want them to have staying power. And one way of doing that, while also thinking ethically, is with The Laundress.
Launched in 2004, the brand has been steadily rising to fame, becoming a cult fave among clotheshorses in North America. They have also launched collaborations with Le Labo, and, funnily enough, singer John Mayer. I spoke with Gabrielle Melhuish,CEO and president of The Laundress (Canada), about why she chose to leave her MBA studies for a chance to work with the brand.
*How did you start working with The Laundress? What was your background before working with this brand?
I grew up with entrepreneurial parents, to whom I look up to greatly. They always encouraged me to follow my own path and (hopefully) one day run my own business.
I was introduced to The Laundress eight years ago and fell in love with the products. I had a skin condition that I found would get irritated by the harsh chemicals in other laundry detergents. The Laundress detergents, being chemical and allergen free, never caused any reaction to my skin. I was working on an MBA certificate when the opportunity presented itself to take over the Canadian Distribution. It seemed like the perfect fit! After meeting Lindsey and Gwen, the founders, I knew that I had made the right choice!

*What first brought your attention to the brand?
I was given a bottle Signature Detergent to try due to the severity of my skin condition. I gradually added their other products to my fabric care and was thrilled with the results. Plus, they’re stylish products, and make even a laundry room look great!
*Why did you decide to get behind this brand in Canada?
The main reason that I wanted to work with The Laundress in Canada is that I truly believe in the products and the company’s mission statement. There is no other product comparable. From it’s chemical free cleaning power, to it’s green initiative to being cruelty free (self-proclaimed animal lover), I respect what The Laundress stands for.
*The Laundress is eco-friendly. What other ways do you incorporated eco-friendly products or practices in your day-to-day?
Our offices are going paperless, all our packing materials are either recycled or green, and we use a water purification system as an alternative to water bottles. As for my day to day routines, I drive a hybrid car, recycle, reuse and compost. Additionally I use only cruelty free products in my skin care regime.
*What are your hopes for The Laundress in the next few years?
I’d like to see our products in as many homes as possible. Any reduction in the chemicals and plastics used in the dry cleaning business is a win for us and the world, in my books.
EDITOR’S PICK: This travel size bottle is perfect for keeping your clothes cling-free, and also for running through your hair when the dry air creates more fly-aways and static than you can handle.
